Acute infectious gastroenteritis is a common medical problem in adults as well as a public health concern because of the potential for outbreaks. Therefore, primary care physicians have a dual role in both caring for individual patients and helping to prevent disease transmission. Here, Dr Townes outlines a stepwise approach to management of acute gastroenteritis and discusses situations in which diagnostic testing is most appropriate from a public health standpoint.
