Patients with chronic kidney disease often visit emergency departments and are hospitalized because of problems related to underlying medical conditions and dialysis access. In this article, the authors discuss clinical care issues in this population, including maintenance of vascular access and optimal nutrition, appropriate selection of medications and laboratory tests, and effective coordination of care.
