County-based maps of five U.S. minority groups show the persistence of and the considerable spatial variations within the United States. The county maps of the conterminous United States show: 1) the leading minority defined by absolute numbers enumerated in the 2000 U. S. Census; 2) “white” population (non-Hispanic) as a percentage of the total population; and 3) the percentage of each minority of the total population within the counties in which they predominate. The absolute (Map 1) and relative values (Map 3) for the minority groups are strikingly different from the conventional method of showing minority groups as a percent of the total population.
