Abstract

Anaphase bridge (arrow) in a human colonic adenocarcinoma with chromosomal instability (CIN) is suggested as a potentially powerful diagnostic tool. The manuscript by Montgomery et al. provides evidence that the simple assessment of histological sections of tumors for anaphase bridges associated with chromosome mis-segregation could provide essential clinical clues which are likely to impact on treatment decisions. Given the different clinical behavior between chromosomally stable and unstable colonic neoplasms and the absence of false negative bridges in chromosomally stable tumors, this appears to be a promising advance in making a diagnosis of interest not only in colonic, but pancreatic cancers and sarcomas which were also investigated in this study.
