Lawrence receives radiation oncology award

Abstract

Theodore Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the Editorial Board of Cancer Biology and Therapy, was awarded the 2009 Gold Medal from American Society for Radiation Oncology otherwise known as ASTRO. Lawrence is the Isadore Lampe Professor and Chair of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Lawrence will be honored in Chicago at the 51st annual ASTRO meeting. The Gold Medal is ASTRO's highest honor; it is awarded each year to two members throughout the country who have made outstanding contributions to the field of radiation oncology, including research, clinical care, teaching and service. Recipients are drawn from any of the scientific disciplines represented by the society's members.

Lawrence's current research interests include new treatments for liver cancer, pancreas cancer, and brain tumors using image-guide therapy and combination chemoradiation with molecularly targeted therapies. The U-M Department of Radiation Oncology is acknowledged as a leader in treating patients with cancer, a status achieved by providing cutting-edge therapies and compassionate, attentive patient care.

ASTRO is comprised of radiation oncologists, radiation oncology nurses, medical physicists, radiation therapists, dosimetrists and biologists. These medical professionals, found at hospitals and cancer treatment centers around the globe, make up the radiation therapy treatment teams that are critical in the fight against cancer. These teams, which often include a nutritionist and a social worker, treat more than 1 million cancer patients each year.
