Abstract
According to NCI predictions, there will be 219,440 new cases and 159,390 deaths from lung cancer in 2009. Previous studies have shown that several pro-survival pathways are upregulated in NSCLC. In the current issue of Cancer Biology & Therapy, Gao and colleagues identify a dual specificity kinase, Mirk/Dyrk1B, that is also important for NSCLC cell survival. The cover image of this month’s issue, taken from their paper, shows a confocal image of an NSCLC specimen expressing high levels of Mirk (green). DAPI (blue) identifies cell nuclei while cytokeratin (red) stains the cytoplasm. To see staining of a region adjacent to the NSCLC section and to learn more about the role of Mirk in NSCLC, see the manuscript by Gao and colleagues.
