Abstract

The University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents approved the appointment of Michele Carbone, MD, PhD, to serve as the next director of UH Mānoa's Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i (CRCH) at its August 27, 2009 meeting. During the 8-month search process, four very talented finalist candidates were identified and there was significant input from members of the CRCH and many health care leaders in the community regarding these candidates.

Dr. Carbone has made significant progress during his brief service as interim director since last November. He has established a cooperative, matrix-managed model that synergizes the efforts of the CRCH, the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), clinical care providers, local hospitals, including Queen's Hospital and Hawai‘i Pacific Health, and private support groups.

As a result of this new model for a consortium of medical/research organizations the National Cancer Institute indicates it anticipates a two-year extension of NCI funding for the CRCH.

Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said, "Given the importance of cancer research to the UH and the medical community, I look forward to the members of the CRCH, our medical community and the many supporters of CRCH working together with Dr. Carbone as we take on the challenges of the next important steps in our growth: recruitment of additional researchers who can establish collaborative projects and build on the current excellence within CRCH, progress in building a new Cancer Research Center, retention of our NCI Cancer Center designation, and continued support of our consortium model with JABSOM and community hospitals.

"We are fortunate to have so many individuals throughout our state who are committed to the importance of advancing the research goals of the CRCH so together we can improve the health and well being of the people of Hawai‘i.

Dr. Carbone is a member of the Editorial Board of Cancer Biology and Therapy.
