OFFSTREAM STORAGE IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA

Pages 19-27 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

The major offstream storage facilities in the Bow and Oldman River Basins in Southern Alberta provide 800,000 acre feet of water storage, primarily for irrigation consumption, and represent almost 50% of the total major storage in the two basins. Studies are underway to increase the amount of offstream storage associated with the four largest irrigation districts and if constructed the additional storage will relieve present inadequacies, particularly in the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District, as well as permit some limited expansion of the irrigable area in all four districts. Development of offstream facilities is important, but is only part of the solution to the problem of water management in Southern Alberta rivers.
