DROUGHT CYCLES AND WEATHER PATTERNS

Pages 68-84 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

This paper reviews briefly the more common definitions of drought and provides an overview of some of the concepts and techniques used in the evaluation of so-called drought cycles. The paper emphasizes the limitations of historical instrumental records for deciphering long-term climatic trends. Proxy data from tree rings, ice cores and deep-sea sediment cores are used to illustrate the characteristics of long-term climatic and hydrologic fluctuations.
