FOREST MANAGEMENT FOR INCREASED WATER YIELD - HOW USEFUL IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA?

Pages 56-75 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

The paper summarizes a study conducted for the Oldman Basin in southern Alberta, to examine the case for management of forest lands in the upper watershed to increase the average water yield. Research results from other regions of the world are reviewed, their applicability to local conditions is assessed, and a controversy between conclusions from the USSR and elsewhere is discussed. The potential for yield augmentation in the Oldman Basin is assessed with special reference to data from Colorado and elsewhere in Alberta. It is concluded that the potential is quite small in relative terms, and that for present planning purposes it would be unwise to count on obtaining significant increases in Oldman River flows.
