WATER-LEVEL FLUCTUATIONS DUE TO EARTH TIDES AT FORT MACKAY, ALBERTA

Pages 87-99 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

Water levels in an observation well near Fort MacKay, Alberta show regular diurnal fluctuations. Statistical analysis of tidal-gravity corrections and water level fluctuations revealed a cause-and-effect relationship. As the tidal correction increases (total gravity decreases) the water level in the well declines due to an expansion in pore volume in the earth caused by the tidal bulge. The minimum water level of the Fort MacKay well occurs about six hours after the maximum of the tidal-gravity correction. This is due to low hydraulic conductivity in the aquifer which produces a significant time lag in the response of the well to the changing pressure head.
