Abstract

The dissolved oxygen content in the water of the Gulf of St. Lawrence varies approximately from 3 ml/ℓ in the deep layers to 8 ml/ℓ in the surface water layer. The minimum dissolved oxygen concentration is at a depth of 200 to 300 m, whereas the maximum is generally towards the bottom of the thermocline. As for as suspended matter is concerned, there is generally very little and the values seldom exceed 1 mg/ℓ. Finally, the pH of the water and sediments varies from 7 to 8 and the concentrations of the trace elements in the region under study are very low and remain within the range of normal values reported for oceans.

La teneur en oxygène dissous dans l’eau du golfe Saint-Laurent varie d’environ 3 ml/ℓ dans les couches profondes à 8 ml/ℓ dans les couches d’eau à la surface. La concentration minimum d’oxygène dissous se situe entre 200 et 300 m de profondeur, tandis que le maximum se situe généralement vers le bas de la thermocline. Du point de vue des substances en suspension, il y en a généralement peu et les valeurs n’excèdent que très rarement 1 mg/ℓ. Enfin, le pH de l’eau et des sédiments varie de 7 à 8 et les concentrations des éléments traces dans la région étudiée sont très faibles et restent dans les normes générales répertoriées pour les océans.
