RAPID RIVER - CASE STUDY OF A SMALL HYDRO PROJECT IN NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN

Pages 38-46 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

A small hydro project, consisting of a 500 kilowatt turbine and a rock weir, was proposed for the community of Stanley Mission, Saskatchewan. It was to serve as an experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of this type of installation. Despite initial acceptance by local residents, opposition developed when some minor changes were introduced to the final design. A provincial Board of Enquiry subsequently recommended against the project, but suggested that an alternate, more acceptable location be sought for this prototype.
