HYDRAULIC AIR COMPRESSOR WITH GAS TURBINES

Pages 273-283 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

The hydraulic air compressor is an ancient device for compressing air by entraining it in a stream of water which passes through a deep stilling cavern before returning to the surface, leaving compressed air in the cavern. Its isothermal compression cycle is ideally suited for combination with a gas turbine. The net saving by combining a hydro site with a peaking gas turbine can be as high as 50% of the gas turbine capacity.
