Abstract
The creation of reservoirs by the flooding of large areas, the fluctuation of its water levels and the clearcutting of its banks, have major impacts on the riparian zones. This habitat is very important and should always be taken into consideration in "Environmental Impacts Studies", also mitigation should be planned to reduce these impacts. The clearcutting of future shorelines is often proposed as a mitigation measure. Planned at the beginning for wood recuperation and esthetic, the clearcutting of Manicouagan-2 and Outardes-2 reservoirs had an influence on the regeneration of the riparian zones. A monitoring program of these reservoirs was elaborated with the objective of following the evolution of the vegetation on the shorelines and of understanding the influence of the clearcutting techniques. After two years of field surveys, conclusions can already be drawn from the monitoring program. Following a brief presentation of the methodology we will present our interpretation of the influence of the water level fluctuation, the nature and the stability of the banks, the orientation of the shorelines, the clearcutting and the presence of logs and wood debris on the regeneration of riparian zones.By comparing our data, of various flooding date, coming from different reservoirs, we could judge the importance and rate of the regeneration process. Our recommandations on the mitigation alternatives will follow.
