EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE CHEMICAL TREATMENTS FOR COLD MOUNTAIN SURFACE WATERS

Abstract

Bench scale (jar test), pilot plant scale (0.016 ML/day capacity) and full treatment plant scale trials were used to optimize cold water chemical pretreatment processes. A number of metallic coagulants (aluminum sulphate, polyaluminum chloride, ferric sulphate) and several low to high molecular weight synthetic polymers were compared. The efficacy of each chemical pretreatment was assessed individually as well as in combination with other chemicals. Physical (turbidity, particle counting), chemical (pH, aluminum, saturation index) and bacteriological water quality indicators were used to evaluate the treatment processes.

Des expérimentations de grandueur laboratoire (d’épreuve de bouteille), de station d’essai (capacité de 0.016 ML par jour) de grandeur naturelle étaient employées pour étudier des prétraitements chimiques dans l’eau froide. Pour la production de l’eau potable, on a essayé plusieurs produits chimiques métalliques de coagulation (le sulfate d’alumine, le sulfate de fer, le chloride d’alumine polymérique) et quelques polymers synthétiques de poids moléculaires varies. Chaque prétraitement chimique était évalué individuellement et en combinaison avec des autres. Trois sortes d’indicateurs de qualité de l’eau : 1. qualité physique, 2. qualité chimique et 3. qualité bactériologique étaient employées pour évaluer les traitments.
