WETLANDS AND CLIMATE CHANGE: A SPECULATIVE REVIEW

Pages 9-22 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

This paper provides a discussion of the potential impacts of climate change on wetlands. These areas have been widely recognized for their hydrological and biological functions. One may anticipate that the currently projected warming trends in global climate will have dramatic effects on the Earth’s wetlands — in their distribution, character, and functioning. An assessment of potential impacts is provided based on an array of existing studies addressing the issue, and on an interpretation of research on the hydrological and biological functioning of wetland areas.
