FARMERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF SOIL EROSION AND ECONOMIC INCENTIVES FOR CONSERVATION TILLAGE

Abstract

Farmers in a southwestern Ontario watershed were surveyed to identify their perceptions of soil erosion on their farms as well as in their townships. These perceptions were compared to estimates made using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). Farmers were also asked which of several economic incentives would best encourage the adoption of conservation tillage. The majority of farmers underestimated the amount of erosion occurring on their farms. Furthermore, most farmers believed that the erosion problem was more serious in their townships than on their farms. The theory of cognitive dissonance may help explain the misperception. Farmers gave a wide range of opinions on the best type of economic incentive. The study suggests that the best combination of educational and economic incentives to encourage conservation adoption may be adopter specific.

Un sondage d’opinion a été effectué auprès des fermiers d’un bassin-versant du sud-ouest de l’Ontario en vue d’obtenir leurs perceptions sur l’érosion du sol dans leurs fermes et leurs comtés. Nous avons comparé la perception des fermiers avec les mesures obtenues à partir de l’équation universelle de la perte du sol. Nous avons aussi demandé aux fermiers d’indiquer qu’elles mesures incitatives économiques encourageraient l’utilisation de pratiques protégeant l’environnement. La plupart des fermiers ont sous-estimé la quantité d’érosion affectant leur ferme. De plus, la majorité des fermiers pensaient que l’érosion était plus sérieuse dans les comtés que dans leur ferme. La théorie de la "cognitive dissonance" peut peut-être nous aider a comprendre cette perception erronée. L’opinion des fermiers variait grandement à savoir quelle serait la meilleure mesure incitative économique. L’étude suggère que la meilleure approche serait une combinaison des mesures incitatives au niveau économique et éducatif selon les besoins spécifiques du fermier.
