AGRICULTURAL AND MARSH LAND USES ON WALPOLE ISLAND: PROFIT COMPARISONS

Pages 111-119 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

Walpole Island has a large expanse of relatively undisturbed wetlands and some reclaimed wetlands. The data on the net operating profits obtained from hunting, fishing, and trapping from one hectare of wetland, and the net operating profits obtained from one hectare of agricultural land were compiled. A comparison of these data showed that hunting, fishing, and trapping practices within wetlands provided higher profits than those obtained from agricultural practices on reclaimed land. Thus, a financial perspective is presented in support of wetland preservation from a case study of the wetlands of Walpole Island.
