FACILITATING INTER-DISCIPLINARITY: THE MAJOR CHALLENGE FOR WATER MANAGEMENT RESEARCHERS AND EDUCATORS

Pages 399-407 | Published online: 23 Jan 2013

Abstract

An interdisciplinary approach to water resources management is now seen as an essential component of a sustainable water resources policy. This paper explores some to the difficulties inherent in promoting inter-disciplinarity, including the use of research and teaching "Centres", and the development of a problem-oriented approach The conclusion is that inter-disciplinarity does not happen without a conscious effect and a targeted policy, but that without it resources will be wasted and policies will be poor.
