Current Meter Rating in Western Canada

Abstract

Irrigation development in western Canada over 100 years ago led to a significant water dispute with the United States and contributed to the negotiation of the Boundary Waters Treaty and the creation of the International Joint Commission. Demands for streamflow data for the administration of international water apportionment and for hydroelectric power development provided the impetus for the establishment of a hydrometric service in 1908. One of the early initiatives of that service was the establishment of a current meter rating station in Calgary in 1911. The station, with its dependence on then state-of-the-art electromechanical devices, was an important factor in western economic development. This illustrated paper describes the early development of the station.

Le développement de systèmes d'irrigation dans l'ouest du Canada, il y a maintenant plus de 100 ans, a mené à une dispute signative concernant l'eau avec les États-Unis et a contribué à la négociation du Traité des eaux limitrophes et la création de la Commission mixte internationale. Les demandes pour les données de débit nécessaires pour l'administration de la répartition internationale de l'eau et pour le développement hydroélectrique a été le catalyseur pour la création du service hydrométrique en 1908. Unes des premières initiatives du service hydrométrique a été la création d'une station de calibration pour moulinet à Calgary en 1911. La station, avec son équipement électromécanique alors à la fine pointe des technologies a été un facteur important pour le développement économique de l'ouest.
