Long-distance migrants and family support: a Dutch case study

Pages 45-54 | Received 07 Apr 2003, Accepted 23 Jun 2003, Published online: 18 Dec 2014

Abstract

The paper discusses what kind of mutual support and care-giving occurs between Dutch migrants residing in Australia and their parents ‘back home’ in the Netherlands. Specific case study examples are used to document the effect of long-distance, as well as situationally determined factors related to joint family history and past experience on migrants’ ability to participate in their family support networks.
