Abstract
As institutions and staff adopt new technologies to support online learning, a number of factors impacting the implementation and sustainability of these tools come into play. These include staff perceptions, cost effectiveness, type of support provided by the information and communication technology systems management and the institution’s strategic initiatives for supporting the implementation of these tools. This paper examines these various factors in the context of online pedagogy in general and more specifically in regard to the adoption of mobile pedagogical tools, Learning Management Systems, and the virtual world program, Second Life. It concludes by highlighting the importance of fostering a supportive environment wherein these barriers are recognised and considered.
