Our Experience in Correction of Low Astigmatism with Toric Intraocular Lenses in Cataract Surgery

ABSTRACT

Here we present our experience and clinical results of toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for pre-existing astigmatism correction. Fifty-three eyes of 47 patients underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification and were implanted with an Acrysof© Toric IOL. Uncorrected visual acuity, residual astigmatism, and postoperative rotation of the IOL were determined six months after the operation. The uncorrected visual acuity was ≥16/20 in 53 eyes (100 %) and ≥20/20 in 42 of these 53 eyes (78.57%). The mean toric IOL axis rotation was 1.5° ± 1.5° (range 1.0°-6.0°) six months after surgery. Implantation of one-piece hydrophobic acrylic toric IOLs appears to have good stability, which enhances the visual outcome and emerges as an attractive alternative for correction of refractive astigmatism.
