Abstract
A novel FACTS (flexible AC transmission system) based on the static switched filter compensator (SSFC) scheme is presented in this paper. The proposed FACTS scheme is based on an intermittent pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching process between two shunt capacitor banks. One of them is in parallel with the capacitor element of a tuned arm filter. The SSFC is controlled by two dynamic regulators using a tri-loop dynamic error driven inter-coupled input to the weighted modified proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. The weighted modified PID is the conventional PID with an additional two error loops to enhance control dynamics and ensure dynamic controller fast response. The SSFC scheme has been fully validated for power quality mitigation, voltage stabilisation and power factor correction using the Matlab/Simulink software environment. This novel scheme can also be extended to smart grid distributed/dispersed renewable energy interface and utilisation systems.
