Note on sources: this paper is derived from two earlier works by the author, notably my Ph.D. thesis ‘Internal Migration and Resettlement of East Indians in Guyana, 1870–1920’ (McGill University, 1976), and a subsequent paper ‘East Indians without sugar? Essequibo, Guyana 1923–39’, submitted to a conference on East Indians in Guyana at the UWI, St Augustine, Trinidad in Sept. 1979. The author lectured at the University of Guyana between 1971 and 1979. Original sources have been provided in the footnotes. The CO/111 series of Colonial Office despatches were consulted in the Public Record Office, London. The Colonial Secretary's files (hereafter CS) and most other records were found in the Guyana National Archives, Georgetown.
