This essay was first presented as a plenary address at the Silver Jubilee Conference of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (aclals) at Canterbury, Kent, in August 1989. It will be appearing, together with the conference proceedings, in a forthcoming book from Sydney: Dangaroo Press, due to be launched in spring 1990 at the European aclals conference in Lecce, Italy.
