1. This review is dedicated to Dr Vera Lapin who worked at the Vienna Cancer Research Institute in the 1970s, rediscovered the pioneering work of Bergmann, Engel and Hofstätter on the role of the pineal gland and malignancy (for review see Lapin Citation1976), and herself performed outstanding experiments in this field. She encouraged us as young students (CB and HB) to take up this topic and became our “scientific mother”. She died on 25 August 2007 and we will always remember her with gratitude and admiration.
