* I conducted field research from July-August 2018 and in February 2019 in Ternate and Tidore, during which I interviewed various people including, Husain Sjah (Sultan of Tidore), Foramadiahi Firman Mudaffar Sjah (Mudaffar Sjah’s third son), Abdullah Husain (the leading sowohi of Tidore), Amin Faaroek [jojau (prime minister of the Tidore court)], Muhamad Saleh [fanyira (head) of Soangare of Ternate], local intellectuals such as Budy Anfield, Hudnan Irsyadi, Maulana Ibrahim, Mustafa Mansur, Rizal, and many others.
