SOME EFFECTS OF GLACIATION ON THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER VALLEYFootnote¹

Wolman, Chairman, Department of Geography, Johns Hopkins University. My interest in the Susquehanna first developed in one of Dr. G. F. Carter's graduate seminars held at Johns Hopkins in 1958. The study really got under way as a result of a series of discussions and arguments with Dr. Wolman during 1959. It was his effort which secured the financial support for the project, and I have benefited from his advice and help throughout the study. I have also gained much from conversation and fieldwork with the late Dr. N. Fast, Dr. J. Goodlet, Dr. C. Denny, Dr. J. Hack, Dr. J. Moss, the late Mr. R. L. Livingstone, Mr. S. B. Whitney, and Dr. B. E. Dethier. Mr. Livingstone was my field colleague in the summer of 1959 and Mr. Whitney provided invaluable help in the summer of 1960. Valuable data have been supplied by a number of people and agencies. Mr. J. Starr of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was most gracious and helpful in giving access to unpublished materials in his agency's Baltimore office. Mr. Walter Lyford, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. C. Gray and Dr. V. Shepps, Pennsylvania Geological Survey, Mr. J. Mulloy, U.S. Geological Survey, Mr. J. E. South, Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and Mr. R. Van Vliet, Pennsylvania Power and Light Company all provided useful information. Mr. A. Everhart and Dr. L. Fonaroff both helped greatly with photography. Mr. D. Johnson, Mr. H. Rendall, Mr. J. Gardner, and others helped in preparing the data and the maps.
