* All authors are members of the SASA research program (Sustainable Agriculture in Semi-arid Africa), a research cooperation between the Centre for Development Research, Copenhagen; Institute of Geography and International Development Studies, University of Roskilde; Institute of Geography, University of Copenhagen; and Royal School of Veterinary and Agricultural Studies, Copenhagen; in collaboration with Institute of Resource Assessment, University of Dar es Salaam. The case village studied here was one of six investigated by an interdisciplinary SASA research team. A draft version of this paper was originally presented at the IUAES/IGU Congress on “Livelihoods from Resource Flows” in Linköping, 19–22 August 1996.
