Examining growth rates of Scopulariopsis brevicaulis on decomposing porcine remains

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine growth rates for the filamentous fungus Scopulariopsis brevicaulis on decomposing porcine remains in relation to three controlled temperatures. This study was performed by inoculating porcine tissue samples retrieved from the same source. These samples were placed into three controlled environments to examine changes over a month. This study was intended to develop a photographic and quantifiable chronology of fungal growth that can be used as a reference by investigative personnel interested in utilizing mycological evidence in death investigations. Providing this novel information to the inadequately studied discipline of forensic mycology is intended to help establish the credibility of this field. These efforts will aid in interpreting post-mortem intervals for cadavers experiencing fungal growth in controlled indoor environments.

RÉSUMÉ

L’objectif de cette étude était d'examiner le taux de croissance du champignon filamenteux Scopulariopsis brevicaulis sur des restes porcins en décomposition en fonction de trois températures contrôlées différentes. Cette étude a été réalisée en inoculant des échantillons de tissus porcins prélevés de la même source et en plaçant ces échantillons dans trois environnements contrôlés afin d’examiner les changements sur une période d’un mois. Cette étude avait pour but développer une chronologie photographique quantifiable de la prolifération fongique pouvant être utilisée comme référence par le personnel d’enquête désirant tirer profit de preuves mycologiques dans le cadre d’enquêtes sur les décès. L’apport ces nouvelles données à la discipline peu étudiée qu’est la mycologie médico-légale vise à aider à établir une crédibilité de ce domaine. Ces efforts contribueront à l’interprétation des intervalles post-mortem pour les cadavres présentant une prolifération fongique dans des environnements intérieurs contrôlés.
