ABSTRACT

Water quality parameters, concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd and Cr) and metalloid (As) in water, sediment and silver barb fish (Barbonymus gonionotus) from reservoir near municipal landfill were investigated. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of heavy metals and metalloid in B. gonionotus and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were determined. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) exceeded the standard. The BAF values of heavy metals and metalloid in gill, liver and muscle were higher than 1, except for Pb in the muscle. The MDA and H2O2 in the fish from the municipal landfill area were higher than the reference area. The SOD and CAT in the fish from the municipal landfill area were lower than the reference area. Metal accumulations in B. gonionotus as well as BOD can induce oxidative stress.
