Avatar of Desire?: Virtual space of possibility in video and telephone analysis

ABSTRACT

In this paper the relationship of the analytic pair in treatments with the aid of digital media is investigated as to how it is experienced in a double virtual relationship in which the other is not physically present. The author argues that ‘remote analysis’ promotes a regression to idealised object imagoes because it is located in a double virtual space—that of the medium and that of psychoanalysis. Both spaces involve an attack on or at least a destabilisation of the defence and so target the domain of the virtually immortal wishful impulses (Freud, 1933, p. 73). With reference to a case example, the author discusses how previously suppressed biographical memories that had only been perceived as physical experience and pain could be lived through in double virtuality and experienced so that they became undeniable for the patient and accessible to working through. As a result emotional insight and deeper understanding were achieved. The psychic reality of the unfulfilled longing became palpable and could be overcome in the virtual space of remote analysis and analysis in person.

Un avatar du désir ? L'espace virtuel dans l'analyse par vidéo ou au téléphone

L'auteure de cet article étudie la façon dont le couple analytique vit la double relation virtuelle où l'autre n'est pas présent physiquement–dans des cures qui ont lieu par le biais de supports numériques. L'auteure soutient que l' »analyse à distance » induit une régression vers les imagos d'un objet idéalisé, dans la mesure où elle opère au sein d'un espace virtuel double—celui du support numérique et celui de la psychanalyse. Ces espaces déclenchent tous deux une attaque ou entraînent tout du moins une déstabilisation des modes de défense, en conséquence de quoi ils ciblent le champ des impulsions de désir virtuellement immortels (Freud, 1933). A l'aide d'un cas clinique, l'auteure évoque la façon dont des souvenirs biographiques précédemment refoulés, qui n'avaient pu être perçus qu'en tant qu'expérience physique ou dans la douleur, pouvaient maintenant être perlaborés grâce à cette double virtualité, en même temps qu'éprouvés, devenant de ce fait, indéniables pour le patient et accessibles à la perlaboration. Par conséquent, il était possible de parvenir à un insight émotionnel et à une compréhension plus profonde. La réalité psychique du désir insatisfait devenue palpable, on pouvait en venir à bout dans l'espace virtuel de l'analyse à distance comme au cours de l'analyse en présentiel.

Avatar of Desire? – Möglichkeitsräume bei Video– und Telefon–Analyse

In diesem Aufsatz wird untersucht, wie die Beziehung des analytischen Paars in einer Behandlung mit Hilfe von digitalen Medien und damit in einer doppelt virtuellen Beziehung, wenn die körperliche Präsenz des Anderen nicht gegeben ist, erlebt wird. Die Autorin führt aus, dass die »Fern-Analyse« eine Regression auf idealisierte Objektimagines befördere, weil sie in einem doppelt virtuellen Raum–dem des Mediums und dem der Psychoanalyse–angesiedelt sei. Beide Räume ziehen einen Angriff auf oder zumindest eine Labilisierung der Abwehr nach sich und zielen dabei in den Bereich der virtuell unsterblichen Wunschregungen (Freud, 1933). Anhand eines Fallbeispiels wird diskutiert, wie vorher unterdrückte biographische Erinnerungen, die nur als körperliches Erleben und Schmerz wahrgenommen worden waren, in der doppelten Virtualität abgebildet und erlebt werden konnten, so dass sie für die Patientin unabweisbar und einer Bearbeitung zugänglich wurden. So gelangen emotionale Einsicht und vertieftes Verstehen. Die Realität der unerfüllten Sehnsucht wurde erfahr- und bewältigbar in den Möglichkeitsräumen von Fern- und Präsenzanalyse.

Nel presente articolo si esamina la relazione tra i membri della coppia analitica in trattamenti condotti con l'ausilio di mezzi digitali, soffermandosi in particolare sul modo in cui tale relazione è vissuta all'interno di uno spazio doppiamente virtuale in cui l'altro non è fisicamente presente. L'Autrice sostiene che l''analisi da remoto' favorisce una regressione verso fantasmi di oggetti idealizzati perché si colloca in un doppio spazio virtuale–quello del mezzo informatico e quello della psicoanalisi. Entrambi gli spazi implicano un attacco o per lo meno una destabilizzazione della difesa, e hanno quindi per bersaglio l'area degli impulsi di desiderio virtualmente immortali (Freud, 1933, p. 73). Prendendo spunto da un caso clinico, l'Autrice discute il modo in cui questa doppia virtualità ha dato la possibilità di vivere ricordi biografici precedentemente rimossi e percepiti fino a quel momento esclusivamente in forma di vissuto fisico doloroso, facendoli esperire al paziente in modo tale che questi non potesse più negarli e rendendoli invece accessibili a un lavoro di elaborazione. Questo processo ha portato all'acquisizione di un maggiore insight emotivo e di una comprensione più profonda. La realtà psichica del desiderio non soddisfatto è divenuta palpabile, e si è potuto superarla nello spazio virtuale dell'analisi da remoto e di quella fatta di persona.

En este artículo se investiga la relación del par analítico en tratamientos con ayuda de medios digitales respecto de la manera en que se experimenta la doble relación virtual en la que el otro no está físicamente presente. La autora sostiene que el “análisis remoto” promueve una regresión a imagos objetales idealizadas por estar localizado en un espacio virtual doble: el del medio y el del psicoanálisis. Ambos espacios implican un ataque a las defensas, o al menos una desestabilización de ellas, y de esa manera apuntan al ámbito de las mociones del deseo virtualmente inmortales (Freud, 1933, p. 73). Mediante una viñeta clínica, se aborda cómo mediante la virtualidad doble el/la paciente pudo soportar y experimentar los recuerdos biográficos antes suprimidos y percibidos como experiencia física y dolor, de manera que se volvieron innegables y accesibles para su elaboración. A raíz de ello, se logró un insight emocional y una mayor comprensión. La realidad psíquica de los anhelos insatisfechos se volvió palpable y pudo ser superada en el espacio virtual del análisis remoto y en el del análisis presencial.
