The Sturdy Incident, 1944: Collateral damage or forgotten war crime?

Pages 326-334 | Published online: 26 Jul 2024

Abstract

Starved of worthwhile targets, the submarines of 8th Flotilla operating from Fremantle in 1944 developed tactics for sinking coastal craft in shallow water by gunfire and demolition charge. One such engagement by Sturdy led to the controversial death of women and children aboard a scuttled ship and was raised in Parliament over 40 years later. Declassified information and recently discovered evidence permit an open-minded review of the incident.

26 At this stage of the war worthwhile torpedo targets were so rare that Sturdy, in common with several other boats of the Eastern Fleet, took fewer reloads on patrol to make space for more 3-inch ammunition.
