Abstract

Diabetes is a global health problem and a national economic burden. Several synthetic antidiabetic drugs are available, but due to notable side effects the need for novel therapeutic agents with improved efficacy and minimal side effects is imperative. Drugs derived from natural compounds are more attractive than synthetic ones because of their diversity, accessibility, affordability and reduced adverse effects. This review summarises the scope of phytotherapy in the management of diabetes mellitus in southern African countries to date. The data from the papers reviewed highlight the potential of southern African medicinal plants in antidiabetic drug discovery. From the findings, it is envisioned that stakeholders, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies and the scientific community will have a look at some of these promising taxa with a view to furthering research and subsequently develop products to better the lives of diabetic victims and the overall economy of the region.
