Abstract

Nonwoven fabrics usually exhibit a more sophisticated behavior against force compared to other fabrics. This paper deals with a new method to simulate the bursting behavior of nonwoven fabrics. To this aim, the spunbonded nonwoven samples in different mass per unit area of 30, 50, 70 and 90 g/m2 were prepared. At the first step, the tensile tests in different directions were conducted on a sample and the elastic (Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio) and plastic properties were extracted from the result of tensile tests. In the next step, it was tried to simulate the same tensile tests using the finite element method known as FEM. To calibrate the FEM model the damage parameters of samples were determined by trial and error. Finally, the maximum force in the bursting test for all samples was predicted using the prepared FEM model and the absolute relative error for samples of 30, 50, 70 and 90 g/m2 were 14.90%, 0.64%, 6.05% and 7.13%, respectively.
