Epigraphic workshops in Sigüenza Cathedral (Guadalajara, Spain) in the late middle ages

SUMMARY

This article addresses the work of the epigraphic workshops and their relationship with sculpture workshops in the final years of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Modern Period. Our primary source has been the inscriptions executed in Gothic minuscule script in Sigüenza Cathedral. We have done a comparative analysis of the script used in these inscriptions, associate it with the sculpture workshops which we know operated in Sigüenza in the aforementioned years, and propose the hypothesis that there were specialists in epigraphic work who provided their services to the large sculpture workshops.

Ateliers épigraphiques de la cathédrale de Siguënza (Guadalajara, Espagne) au bas Moyen Age

Cet article traite du travail des ateliers épigraphiques et de leur lien avec les ateliers de sculpture dans les dernières années du Moyen Age et au début de la période moderne. Nos premières sources ont été les inscriptions exécutées dans des caractères de minuscules gothiques de la cathédrale de Sigüenza. Nous avons effectué une analyse comparative des caractères utilisés dans ces inscriptions, et l’avons confrontée aux ateliers de sculpture qui opéraient à Sigüenza dans les années susmentionnées. Il en résulte que des experts du travail épigraphique semblent avoir offert leurs services à des ateliers de sculpture plus grands.

RESUMEN

Talleres epigráficos en la catedral de Sigüenza (Guadalajara, España) en la Baja Edad Media

Este artículo aborda el trabajo de talleres epigráficos y su relación con los talleres de escultura entre el final de la Edad Media y el comienzo del período moderno. Nuestra fuente principal han sido las inscripciones ejecutadas en escritura gótica minúscula en la catedral de Sigüenza. Hemos realizado un análisis comparativo de la escritura de estas inscripciones y la hemos relacionado con los talleres de escultura que trabajaron en Sigüenza en este período y proponemos la hipótesis de que había especialistas en el trabajo epigráfico que prestaron sus servicios a los grandes talleres de escultura.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Spätmittelalterliche Inschriften aus Schreibwerkstätten in der Kathedrale von Sigüenza (Guadalajara, Spanien)

Dieser Artikel thematisiert die Arbeit der epigraphischen Werkstätten und ihre Beziehung zu Skulpturenwerkstätten in den letzten Jahren des Mittelalters und dem Beginn der der Neuzeit. Unsere Hauptquelle waren die Inschriften, die in gotischer Minuskelschrift in der Kathedrale von Sigüenza ausgeführt wurden. Wir haben eine vergleichende Analyse der Inschrift in diesen Inschriften verwendet, assoziieren es mit den Skulptur-Workshops, die wir wissen, in Sigüenza in den genannten Jahren betrieben, und schlagen die Hypothese, dass es Spezialisten in epigraphischen Arbeit, die Dienstleistungen für die großen Skulpturenwerkstätten.

RIASSUNTO

Le botteghe di lapicidi nella cattedrale di Sigüenza (Guadalajara, Spain) durante il basso Medioevo

Questo articolo parla del lavoro delle botteghe di lapicidi e del loro rapporto con quelle degli scultori fra il volgere del Medioevo e l’inizio dell’Età moderna. La nostra fonte primaria sono le iscrizioni eseguite in minuscola gotica nella cattedrale di Sigüenza. Abbiamo svolto un’analisi comparativa dei caratteri utilizzati per queste iscrizioni, e le abbiamo associate alle botteghe di scultura note e attive a Sigüenza nel periodo di riferimento, suggerendo l’ipotesi che vi fossero degli specialisti in iscrizioni epigrafiche che prestavano la loro opera presso botteghe scultoree più importanti.
