ABSTRACT

This work examines the impact of ethanol addition to mustard oil biodiesel (MOBD) in a diesel engine to view its effect on emission characteristics. Two fuel samples were prepared using a novel surfactant Span 80, with different concentrations (94% mustard oil + 4% ethanol + 2% Span 80 (MOBD1) and 90% mustard oil + 8% ethanol + 2% Span 80 (MOBD2)). Experimental results showed that the CO and NOx emissions are reduced by 4–11% and 6–10% of mustard oil ethanol samples compared to neat MOBD. Furthermore, the introduction of MOBD–ethanol emulsions in the diesel engine reduces the emissions.
