Experimental investigation of emission characteristics on ricebran biodiesel–alcohol blends in a diesel engine

Abstract

The present investigation is meant to research and look at influence of biodiesel–propanol and biodiesel–pentanol blends on emission characteristics of a diesel engine. Investigations were led on D100 (diesel), B100 (biodiesel), B50 (50% biodiesel and 50% diesel), BPen20 (80% biodiesel and 20% pentanol), BPro20 (80% biodiesel and 20% propanol) at different engine loads. With respect to emission characteristics, the influences on CO, HC, Nox and smoke emissions were investigated. On considering all engine loads, the BPro20 and BPen20 blends increase CO emission by 31.8% and 40.9%, and HC emission by 25.8% and 8.6%, respectively, but reduces NOx emission by 14.1% and 8.9%, and smoke emission by 17.7% and 6.7%, respectively. In general, the BPro20 blend is further effective in decreasing smoke and NOx emissions whereas the BPen20 blend would prompt to less increment in HC emissions.
