Abstract
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine technology has the potential to target better fuel economy and comply with the tightening legislation of emissions. HCCI technology drawing the significant attention because of high thermal efficiency and lower emissions of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM). However, the technology suffers some technical barriers such as combustion control, limited range of operation, and high hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. The current studies review the main technical barriers for the technology implementation and assess the proposed solutions to the barriers. The main reasons for the barriers and the effects on engine components were discussed in detailed. Finally, all the possible solutions to address the technological problems were discussed in the study, which would help the researchers and original engine manufacturers (OEMs) to promote the HCCI technology.
