Acknowledgments
The programmes established by the US Water Resources Research Act and Water Resources Planning Act contributed to my ability to explain the evolution of water resources research. This support began in 1964 when the Alabama Water Resources Research Institute funded the research equipment for my graduate studies. Later, as director of the University of North Carolina Institute and then the Colorado Institute, I had the opportunity to work with top-level water executives, including a former director of the US Office of Water Resources Research and the first Executive Director of the US Water Resources Council. These experiences and many interactions with water managers and the public provided first-hand knowledge about the water industry.
