Notes

1. The Arthashastra is an ancient Sanskrit treatise about statecraft, including economics, politics, and strategy. Kautilya (a.k.a. Chanakya or Vishnugupta) is usually credited as the author, but it was probably authored by several people over centuries. In 1905, it was ‘rediscovered’ by scholar Rudrapatna Shamasastry (1868–1944) who published it 4 years later as well as published a 1915 English translation. See: Kautilya, trans and ed. L.N. Rangarajan, The Arthashastra (London: Penguin Classics, 1992).
