Preparation of MgO@SiO2 encapsulated polymethylene bis (pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde)o-phenylenediimine: applied as efficient adsorbent for Cu (II) ions from aqueous system

ABSTRACT

The present work reports a newly prepared Schiff base bis(pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde)-o-phenylenediimine and its Schiff-based resin polymethylene bis(pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde)-o-phenylenediimine via condensation with formaldehyde (HCHO) at 120–130°C for 1–2 h. Schiff bases (also well known as azomethine or imine), named after Hugo Schiff, described by Schiff (1864) in the nineteenth century. A compound having an azomethine group (–HC=N–p), well known as Schiff base is prepared by condensation of a primary amine with a carbonyl compound. Schiff bases with metal ions are necessary for the improvement of the coordination chemistry field. The synthesised Schiff base and its resin were recrystallised and melting point was recorded. The prepared material was characterised by, CHN Analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Visible), and SEM analysis. Afterwards, synthesised Schiff-based resin was encapsulated by metal nanoparticles MgO@SiO2 and resulted in the material is polymethylene bis(yrrole-2-carboxaldehyde)-o-phenylenediimine magnesium oxide nanoparticles (PMBPCPhenMgO). The adsorption capacity for removing Cu (II) from the aqueous solution was evaluated. The result encapsulated material was used as adsorbent and showed that Schiff-based resin-encapsulated metal nanoparticles are an attractive alternative adsorbent material for the Cu (II) ions removal from aqueous solution.
