ABSTRACT

In recent years, numerous research studies have been performed in the field of pyrolysis and thermochemical biomass transformation into biofuels, i.e. bio oil, biochar and biogas. Additionally, pyrolysis is an efficient and effective conversion technology as compared to other thermochemical technologies due to various socioeconomic benefits. Biomass, and its composition, plays an ultimate role in the determination of pyrolysis products and is an ecofriendly or promising alternative source of renewable energy. This review paper attempts to suggest specific criteria for biomass selection for the pyrolysis process to obtain maximum yield of biooil, biochar and biogas. Lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose are the key constituents present in varying biomass which greatly affect the products of pyrolysis. This review paper summarises biomass resources, types, the composition of biomass, preliminary tests and physical and chemical characteristics for suitable selection of biomass for pyrolysis.
