UWB Rectangular DRA Integrated with Reconfigurable Narrowband Antenna for Cognitive Radio Applications

ABSTRACT

A new ultra-wideband (UWB) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) integrated with a reconfigurable narrowband (NB) antenna is designed and analyzed for cognitive radio (CR) applications. The UWB antenna consists of a rectangular dielectric resonator which is fed by a microstrip line. The NB antenna composes of a rectangular ring patch and three stubs which is fed by a microstrip line. The UWB and reconfigurable NB antennas provide 2:1 VSWR bandwidth from 3 to 11 GHz and from (3.25 to 3.7 GHz, 5.5 to 6.5 GHz, and 8 to 8.4 GHz), respectively. There is a reasonable isolation between the antennas. The narrowband reconfigurability is achieved by two p-i-n diode switches within the antenna structure. A prototype of the integrated antenna was fabricated and its performance was verified. The dimensions of the antenna are 65 mm × 40 mm × 6.5 mm. The antenna represents good radiation characteristics. Also, in order to reduce mutual coupling, the space between the ground planes is 10 mm.

Asghar Keshtkar

Asghar Keshtkar was born in Ardabil, Iran, in 1962. He received the BSc degree in electrical engineering from Tehran University, Tehran, Iran, the MSc degree in electrical engineering from the University of Khaje-Nasir, Tehran, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, in 1989, 1992, and 1999, respectively. He is currently a Professor with the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Imam Khomeini International University (IKIU), Ghazvin, Iran. His current research interests include electromagnetics, bio electromagnetics, and electromagnetic launchers and antennas.

Mohammad Naser-Moghadasi

Mohammad Naser-Moghadasi was born in Saveh, Iran, in 1959. He received the BSc degree in communication Eng. in 1985 from the Leeds Metropolitan University (formerly Leeds Polytechnic), UK. Between 1985 and 1987 he worked as an RF design engineer for the Gigantic Company in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. From 1987 to 1989, he was awarded a full scholarship by the Leeds educational authority to pursue an MPhil. Studying in CAD of microwave circuits. He received his PhD in 1993, from the University of Bradford, UK. He was offered then a 2 years Post Doc. To pursue research on Microwave cooking of materials at the University of Nottingham, UK. From 1995, Naser-Moghadasi joined Islamic Azad University, Science & Research Branch, Iran, where he currently is an Associate Professor and head of Telecommunication group. His main areas of interest in research are microstrip antenna, microwave passive and active circuits, RF MEMS. Naser-Moghadasi is member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, MIET and the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE). Behbod Ghalamkari

Behbod Ghalamkari was born in Tehran, Iran, on 5 December 1981. He received MSc and PhD degrees from the Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Tehran, Iran, both in electrical engineering, in 2007 and 2013, respectively. In 2015, he joined Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, Tehran Iran, where he currently is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His main interest lies in the scattering and inverse scattering in electromagnetic problems, antenna design and active microwave circuits.
