The dynamics and mechanics of media framing within Moroccan music and film festivals

Abstract

This article examines the mediatization of culture in Moroccan urban society. Drawing on two illustrative examples, namely MFRW (Mawazine Festival Rhythms of the World) and MIFF (Marrakech International film Festival), the article attempts to understand the dynamics and mechanics of media framing in affecting positively and/or negatively music and film festivals in Morocco. While it tries to determine how the interplay between media and art has become integrated into the very fabric of Moroccan social and cultural life, the current study also investigates how the two festivals were framed differently. The results show that being active on the largest media scale can not only help sustain the festival landmark, it can also undermine it. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role played by various media including social media, online newspapers, festival official websites, and cartoons in order to enhance digital festival engagement and to provide event planners with the most important information in the marketing and commercialization of Moroccan arts festivals.

Cet article examine la médiatisation de la culture dans la société urbaine marocaine. En s’appuyant sur deux exemples illustratifs, à savoir le MFRW (Mawazine Festival Rhythms of the World) et le MIFF (Marrakech International Film Festival), cet article tente de comprendre la dynamique et la mécanique du cadrage médiatique en affectant positivement et/ou négativement les festivals de musique et de cinéma au Maroc. Tout en essayant de déterminer comment l’interaction entre les médias et l’art s’est intégrée dans le tissu même de la vie sociale et culturelle marocaine, la présente étude examine également comment les deux festivals ont été encadrés différemment. Les résultats obtenus à partir de cette enquête ont montré que le fait d’être actif sur la plus grande échelle médiatique peut non seulement contribuer à soutenir le point de repère du festival, mais aussi le miner. L’objectif de cette étude est d’examiner le rôle joué par diverses formes de médias, y compris les médias sociaux, les journaux en ligne, les sites Web officiels des festivals et les bandes dessinées, afin d’améliorer l’interaction virtuel des festivals et de fournir aux organisateurs d’événements les informations les plus importantes pour le marketing et la commercialisation des festivals artistiques marocains.
