A history of women PE teachers in France. The inner workings of a research process

Pages 139-154 | Published online: 18 Mar 2024

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore the inner workings of a PhD thesis that analyzes the careers of women physical education teachers in France in the second half of the twentieth century. This contribution, which is epistemological, methodological, and reflective in nature, examines three aspects: the genesis of the research project, the search for archives, and the treatment of the sources. This history of women PE teachers, whose author is both a member of the community he studied and an outside observer specializing in the field of gender relations, begins by raising the question of what is identical and different. The article goes on to scrutinize the sources chosen, as well as the material, technical, and social aspects of the research. Lastly, this article focuses on ways of interpreting sources through the prism of physical and emotional experiences which a historian may undergo as he explores the archives.

Notes

1. The CRIS was restructured in 2015 to create the Laboratory on Vulnerabilities and Innovation in Sport (L-VIS) and the Interuniversity Laboratory of Motor Biology (LIBM).

2. The training I received in the STAPS department was not specifically related to the history of women and gender. In fact, there was strong resistance to the inclusion of the latter in French institutions at the time (Thébaud, Citation2007).

3. The Ministerial Council appointed Thierry Terret as Director of the Réunion Education Authority on 3 January 2013. He was therefore unable to continue co-supervising my thesis.

4. During the 2007–2008 academic year, when I worked as a trainee teacher to validate my Certificate of Aptitude for Teaching in Physical Education (CAPEPS), I wrote a dissertation on the issues of gender and equality in PE, which was later published as part of a book on gender issues in teacher training (Saïdi et Szerdahelyi, Citation2013).

5. I am thinking in particular of the debate around the introduction of gender in some high school life and earth sciences textbooks in 2011, of the French Parliament’s call for the creation of a commission to investigate the dissemination of “gender theory” in France in 2012, of the protests against legislation allowing “marriage for all” in 2013, and of the questioning of the “equality ABC” system for primary schools in 2014.

9. The relocation of the Fontainebleau collections began in 2012, before access to the site was prohibited in 2014 for safety reasons – owing to the structural condition of the main buildings. The decision to close the site permanently was taken in 2016. This closure led to a gradual redistribution of the archives – still underway at the time of writing – to the Paris and Pierrefitte-sur-Seine sites.
