On Haiku

Hiroaki Sato. New York: New Directions, 2018. 320 pp.

Pages 108-112 | Published online: 14 Apr 2020

Notes

1. The phrase is from Virginia Jackson, who argues that this mode of reading emerged only recently in English as well. See Jackson, Dickinson’s Misery: A Theory of Lyric Reading, 24.

2. Sato renders Sōseki’s title more literally, as Things I Remember and Others. Recollections is Maria Flutsch’s rendering for her published translation. See Natsume, Recollections.
