Abstract

With the current debate on the effect of WhatsApp on academic performance, there is little rigorous econometric research backing each side of the argument. Applying a seemingly unrelated regression model to a primary data, it was found that the use of WhatsApp has a positive effect on the academic performance of students so long as the dominant use is for study related purposes. The findings of the study call for an integration of the mobile technology into learning process and library with key focus on creation of a user group on WhatsApp to provide a platform for lecturers to share lecture materials, other digital information, and alert services related to academics.
